Gulfstream Wahoo Fishing

Yesterday I had the pleasure of taking some folks fishing that are local from the Leland area. James and Bobbie Goodman, and James and Angela Gouldin. They were wanting to get offshore and chase some wahoo and blackfin tuna out in the Gulfstream. The wahoo fishing has been pretty steady the whole month of September and we were all excited to get out there. We started our morning at 5:00am leaving the Ocean Isle Fishing Center, loaded up with a bunch of ice and ballyhoo ready for whatever was waiting for us. There was a clear sky with a beautiful crescent moon and an ocean as calm as it gets. I punched in some numbers about 60 miles offshore where there was some good fishing the day before. Whenever we arrived we deployed the full spread and began looking around. After trolling for about 15 - 20 minutes I decided that the condtions were not very good in this area anymore. Very green blended water and not much bait around. Working our way to the east some more we started seeing some better water with a little bit of life. After an hour or so of bordem we finally had a bite, a couple small mahis came in and we caught a few of those guys real quick. Ended up working around there for another 30 minutes or so and caught a nice sized king mackerel but still no bites from the target species. We pushed more east and finally ended up in some real nice conditions. Blue water with lost of big schools of bonitas and skip jacks, a wahoos favorite meal. Around 11:00 we had a good long rigger bite that came down and pulled off a good bit of string. Theres a tell tale sign of a wahoo and this was going to be one. James fought the fish for about 15 minutes and we were able to get him in the boat nice and we were able to gaff it and get it in the boat. A nice sized wahoo about 30 pounds came over the side and everyone was super excited. I decided that stick in that area the rest of the day and grind it out. We were able to catch two more wahoo and a couple tunas all in that area. As our day came to end an end everyone on the boat was whooped and we were happy with our day. We had a beautiful ride back to land as the ocean stayed beautiful for us the whole ride back. The wahoo fishing will only get better as we get later in the season so give us a call to get out on the water and get in on some fun! - Capt Austin
